How to Overcome Unworthiness

Do you ever feel like you are unworthy of being used by God?

Do you find yourself comparing your gifts and abilities with others and coming to the conclusion that you couldn’t possibly do what they do?

Well you’re right about one thing – you are unworthy and guess what, so am I.

However, the beauty of this is that through Jesus we are more than worthy and more than conquerors

“In all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.” (Romans 8:37)

In order to be fully used by God, we must admit that we are unworthy and weak in our own strength; all selfish strength, pride and ambition must be cast aside in order for God to truly do a work in us and use us in ways unimaginable.

“Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think.” (Ephesians 3:20)

The hardest part is admitting that we are unworthy without falling into the lie that we are worthless.

Satan plants the lie that we are worthless and insignificant but God wants to water the seed and the promise that he sowed long ago,

“For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.” (Ephesians 2:10)

You are a masterpiece of the Creator of heaven and earth, handcrafted with love and He had good things planned for you even before you were conceived – how amazing is that – couldn’t you just rest in this promise?

So if you find yourself comparing yourself to others, thinking you’re not as great as them or you couldn’t do what they do, remember – YOU have skills, abilities and gifts that God uniquely crafted and set aside just for you, even if you tried to be a copycat of someone else it just wouldn’t work!

I occasionally battle with this in my writing when I’m thinking from my selfish tendencies – I view other blogs and sites and articles and think “How could I possibly add value like they do? How could I possibly reflect God’s glory like they do?” I battle with this as a Christian woman and wife and think “If only I were as spiritual and gifted as she” or “If only I could be as great a wife as she.”

It could be very dangerous if I stayed in this state but I’ve learned to remove the ‘I’ from these type of statements and replace it with ‘HE’: “Lord how would You like me to add value in this world? Lord how would You have me reflect Your glory through the gifts you’ve provided? Father, give me Your wisdom and knowledge; show me how to be a godly wife and woman.”

Commiting it over to the Lord takes the burden and pressure off of ‘me’.

We all have these insecurities and whether your insecurities are in your career or being a parent or a spouse or a Christian remember that our confidence comes from Christ and when we surrender to His will – we will not fail.

For the Lord will be your confidence, and will keep your foot from being caught.” (Proverbs 3:26)

Stop & Reflect
: Are you buying into the lie that you are worthless? Understand that this is a seed sown by Satan.

Instead, buy into the promises of God. Come before his throne and admit that yes, you are unworthy, however, because of His perfect love for us He sacrificed His son so that through Him we could be restored, renewed and used for His glory.

Allow God to work through you and when the ‘I’ statements start to creep in, replace them with ‘He’ statements and that is how you will know God’s perfect will.

“Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.” (Romans 12:2)

Father, forgive me for believing the lie that I am worthless and insignificant. I admit that I am unworthy but that is the beauty of your love and greatness and my need for Jesus. I humbly surrender to you Lord to do what you will for my life.

Forgive me when I compare myself with others because you did not make me like anyone else; my voice, my thoughts and my abilities are my own – personally crafted by you, the ultimate craftsman. Help me to find my strength and confidence in you and you alone and use me for your glory. I pray in Jesus’ name – Amen.

Thank you for visiting – God bless.
