What does it mean to ‘be still’ in a world that is so busy?

“Be still, and know that I am God!” Psalms‬ ‭46:10‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Be still…what does that even mean these days?

When every minute of every day is crammed with ‘stuff’ — from deadlines, to to-dos and not to mention the all too draining internet overload there is absolutely no time to ‘be still’.

Even in my so-called ‘down time’, I’m filling every minute of it with busyness; I’m either reading or listening to music or pondering over how I can add more ‘stuff’ to my already stuffed list!

Can anyone out there relate!?

We have been conditioned to feel that ‘not being busy’ means we are missing out — missing out on precious minutes of catching up, missing out on important e-mails, messages and posts.

The dismal truth is, by not being still we are missing out on something that is dire, meaningful and necessary this very minute!

The most important message of all is just waiting to be downloaded into your inbox.

Be Still And Know That I Am God.

God is waiting to fill our dropbox, inbox and internal message center with guidance, wisdom and every instruction that is essential for navigating through this treacherous, unpredictable but still beautiful life.

But how can we expect to receive his messages when our inbox is already full?

How can we possibly expect to hear from him and truly know him when every waking minute is filled with noise?

Well, in his greatness, he tells us exactly what we need to do, “Be still and know that I am God.” (Psalm 46:10)

He doesn’t say, ‘please try to find some time to be still‘ or ‘you really should be still’ – no, in fact he commands us, “Be still and know that I am God!”

Junk Mail

I know from the outside I can appear to be still and calm but if you were to peek inside this little brain of mine you’d see a whole lot of anarchy (and even some malarkey) going on and guess what –- God is able to peek in!

He reads all the mail – junk mail and all!   He knows the thoughts we think and how worthless they really are. (Psalms 94:11)

That’s exactly what happened when God spoke this verse to me the other day.

He saw my inbox flooded with junk mail and had me empty it out so that there was only room for him.

In this moment of stillness, it was precious, intimate, personal time with just He and I.

Stop & Reflect: Do you know God and his greatness? Or is your inbox filled to the brim with no room for him?

Do you constantly fill your agenda and calendar and to-do lists with stuff?

Maybe you’re feeling disconnected from God and can’t figure out why – maybe it’s time to disconnect from what’s consuming you and connect with the one who can fill you.

Meditate on today’s verse – Be Still and know that He is God and see what he wants to reveal to you today.

As always, I’d love to hear your thoughts on today’s post.  What did you find when you stopped and reflected?  Feel free to share in the comments below.
